This one-off remodel was created using various parts, including some from a GM Ground Type, to repair a Gundam Ground Type that was heavily damaged during an attempt to capture the Principality of Zeon's Apsaras II.
The Gundam Ground Type was experimentally produced in small numbers during the early stages of the Federation Forces' MS mass production plan.
Because much of its armor and internal parts were recycled or reproduced from surplus Gundam parts, it lacked a stock of replacement parts, and so bases often had to make field repairs using parts from other machines and equipment.
When Shiro Amada's Gundam Ground Type was incapacitated in the battle against the Apsaras II, his ideas were combined with the combat data collected up to that point to perform a complete overhaul, in the hope of improving the original machine's ground combat performance.
Ez8, or "Extra-Zero-Eight," is not an official model number.
This refers to the "81" on the machine's chest armor, which represents the first unit of the 08th MS Team, or in other words the commander's machine.

A Federation Forces MS pilot assigned to the 08th MS Team of the Federation Ground Force's Far Eastern Mechanized Composite Battalion, as a replacement for a predecessor who suffered a nervous breakdown.
He has a bitter past in which he failed to protect his family from the Zeon poison gas attack on Side 2, and thus prioritizes his friends' lives above all else, but this makes others consider him a weak and inexperienced leader.
Even so, he continues to hold tight to his morals and shows flexibility and tactical skill by befriending guerrilla soldiers, eventually winning the trust of his comrades.
He met Aina Sahalin, a female officer of the Zeon forces, in a battlefield in space. After confirming their feelings for each other he starts to question the reasoning behind war, where two people in love can kill each other.
He then faces a great challenge, as he starts to find meaning in his battles while questioning the true nature of love.
