Driven into a corner by the invading mobile suits of the Principality of Zeon, the Federation Forces developed this melee combat MS based on the development plan known as Operation V, which was intended to turn the tide of the war.
Because it was designed for combat data collection and versatile functionality, it has a Core Block system compatible with the Guncannon and Guntank, Luna Titanium alloy armor, a beam rifle with the power of a warship's main gun, and other technologies that were cutting edge at the time of its creation.
It was among the best of the mobile weapons used during the One Year War.
It was so versatile that it could fight everywhere from space to undersea with almost no modifications, and was even able to enter the atmosphere on its own.
The Gundam and its superior performance continued to pile up victories as the main weapon of the White Base Corps, and it was widely feared by the Zeon Forces, who nicknamed it the "Federation's White Devil."

A boy from Side 7 who loves nothing more than playing with machines.
He accidentally came across a manual during the Zeon attack, and used it to pilot the Federation Forces' new MS Gundam. He's continued to pilot ever since.
At the beginning he became part of the White Base Corps against his will and found it difficult to fight, causing friction with White Base captain Bright Noa, and occasionally even refusing to go into battle.
But after more experience in the battlefield, he matured as a soldier and as a person.
This accelerated his awakening as a Newtype, and he used his powers to become an ace pilot and the center of the Federation's "Gundam legend".
